Olive oil has been used to stimulate hair growth for quite some time, among a handful of other essential oils and ingredients. With a blend of various hydrating and healing ingredients, you can craft some soothing hair growth serums that are sure to increase hair health overall.
Olive Oil for Hair Loss
For all of the following recipes, simply combine all the ingredients thoroughly and apply to the hair with a dry hairbrush or something similar. Feel free to massage into the scalp and cover your hair with a shower cap to seal in the recipe for roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
1. Olive Oil, Egg, Honey, Banana
There are really just countless combinations of essentials that can benefit the hair and scalp, but other recipes utilize basic home ingredients due to their rich nutrients and hydration capabilities, and that’s what is going here.
Eggs are excellent sources of not only protein, but also essential fatty acids and biotin, all of which promote healthy hair and hair growth alike. Honey is incredibly versatile as well, and believe it or not, bananas are actually quite hydrating. This recipe intends to repair damaged hair, promote hair growth, and generate a healthy thickness to your hair.
Ingredients: Mash a banana and combine it with 1 tbsp. of raw honey, 3 tbsp. of olive oil, and an egg.
2. Olive Oil, Gooseberry, Castor Oil, Honey
Feel free to smash some gooseberries if you can find them. They’re native to Europe, but are available in plenty of other places, though you can purchase this in a powder as well. The gooseberry is a great addition to any hair repair recipe as it nourishes your scalp and your hair at the roots.
As well as being high in fatty acids, the gooseberry also targets blood circulation on the scalp, a frequent issue for those struggling with hair loss. Increased circulation promotes health and growth by strengthening your roots.
The rest of the ingredients generate hydration, and you can use 1 tbsp olive oil with 1 tbsp castor oil, a handful of gooseberries (or 1 tbsp of gooseberry powder), and 1 tbsp of raw honey.
3. Olive Oil, Raw Honey, Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E is a far-reaching ingredient that you will find in a significant portion of hair products, unsurprisingly so. Vitamin E promotes blood circulation and moisturizes the scalp as well as improves natural oil production. Many of its antioxidant properties improve hair growth and prevent hair loss while maybe adding some shine as well.
The honey aims to lock in some of the moisture generated from the oils, but don’t overdo it on the Vitamin E. You can add ½ tsp of the Vitamin-E oil to 3 tbsp of olive oil and 2 tbsp of raw honey.
4. Olive Oil, Banana, Lemon Juice
The banana is back again, only this time with lemon juice, which has excellent anti-fungal properties. The lemon’s fresh scent, Vitamin C, and cleansing abilities are the reasons why this fruit has such a broad spectrum of applications. It’s especially beneficial for dry scalps and promoting hair growth, creating a welcoming environment for the hair to grow, which is why so many of these recipes aim to hydrate.
Once again, you can smash up the banana and thoroughly mix in 1 tbsp of lemon juice and 2 tbsp of olive oil. Make sure the banana is completely smashed, as you are trying to create as much of a liquid as you can, one that can penetrate the hair and rest on the scalp.
5. Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Full-Fat Yogurt
Coconut oil is a notorious savior of the skin including the scalp given its fat content and hydrating qualities, and you might honestly see some benefits from coconut oil completely on its own. But for the sake of this recipe, you can combine the coconut oil with yogurt and olive oil.
Yogurt? Yes, yogurt. The yogurt is essentially a conditioning agent with a high fat and protein content, so you are getting hydration as well as nutrients. It should also soften the scalp and the hair to generate a healthier environment for hair growth.
Use 1 tbsp of both the olive oil and the coconut oil along with 2 tbsp of yogurt. As with the olive oil, use extra-virgin coconut oil. While you should use the unrefined coconut oil, if you don’t like the smell of coconut, you can use the refined version, which is odorless. Depending on the temperature, the coconut oil will be a mushy solid or a greasy liquid, and in the case of the former, you can microwave it briefly.
6. Olive Oil, Coconut Milk, Raw Honey
On a similar note, this sweet and creamy concoction of coconut milk and honey provides excellent hydration as well. While the coconut milk and the coconut oil provide similar benefits, coconut milk also generates thickness while promoting hair growth, and you might see some additional bounce to your hair as well.
Ingredients: Simply combine 2 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tbsp of raw honey, and a whole cup of coconut oil.
7. Olive Oil and Rosemary, Lavender, and Lemongrass Essential Oils
This last one combines some of the essential oils namely rosemary, lavender, and lemongrass, all of which have excellent properties that tackle a handful of hair problems.
Rosemary improves hair function on a cellular level, increasing cellular metabolism and promoting hair growth in a way that increases thickness. Rosemary is also one of the few oils that has been specifically shown to revert damages and hair loss from alopecia or male pattern baldness.
Lavender is a wonderfully soothing essential oil with antimicrobial properties, making it an excellent ingredient for recipes targeting hair growth and hair dryness. Lemongrass heals the scalp and strengthens the hair follicles. Add equal parts of all of these oils to the olive oil for an excellent hair growth formula.
You can essentially add any of these oils to all of the previous recipes or choose other essential oils notoriously used for hair stimulation such as peppermint, cedarwood, tea tree, and clary sage, among others.
